The Zoldyck’s “Boys”
I just want to share my thoughts and opinion on this random matter. They say if you are confused about what topic to write, just write things that you like. In that matter, I’m writing this because I’m a fan of the show.
I suppose you know who the Zoldyck is if you open this article. The Zoldyck is considered the deadliest family of assassins in the Hunter X Hunter Universe. They live on the summit of Kukuroo mountain. The family has ten members consisting of great-grandfather, grandfather, grandmother, father, mother, and five children.
Manga readers or the anime watcher must know that there were debates regarding Zoldyck’s boys especially the two youngest ones, Kalluto and Alluka, whether if they were boys or girls. These unexpected gender complexities in this show make us unable to stop asking what sex are they really. Not only Zoldyck, Togashi, the writer of Hunter X Hunter, also left the fans confused on Neferpitou, one of the King’s Royal Guard in the Chimera Ant arc, being a male or a female. However, I can accept Neferpitou's sex and gender ambiguity because she is a chimera ant, she is out of this world. I can call her a “thing” and problem solved. But, The Zoldyck is a different case.
I just want to share my thoughts and opinion on this random matter. They say if you are confused about what topic to write, just write things that you like. In that matter, I'm writing this because I’m a fan of the show.
What sex are they really?
Before we get to the opinions, here is some fact on what the two kids — Kalluto and Alluka — sex really is. These data and facts come from the (not so thorough) research I did on the internet.
For Kalluto, there was not much information I can gather from the show which proved that he was indeed a male character. But in the Hunter X Hunter official databook, Kalluto was listed as a male character. It’s hard to believe that this shoulder-length black-haired, kimono-wearing kid was actually a male character. But it is what it is.
In the case of Alluka however, the show always indirectly stated that Alluka — the youngest Zoldyck family member — was a male character. Zoldyck butler Mitsuba for example refers to Alluka as “Bochamma” which means a boy from a rich or powerful family. The butler refers to her as a male character. Another thing is when Gon, Leorio, and Kurapika visit The Zoldyck estate. The tour guide on the bus said the Zoldyck family has 5 kids and all of them are boys. Lastly, Illumi — Killua’s brother — also refers to Alluka as “he”.
With those proof of Alluka being a male character. Why does Killua still refer to Alluka as “her”? Also, why do Alluka and Kalluto dressed like a female? I am confused as well but I have a few opinions on the matter that I want to share.
1. Wanting a Daughter
As you all know, there are 5 children in the Zoldyck family and they are all boys. But, the last two boys — Alluka and Kalluto — dressed like a girl. Why is it? what I think is that the mother wants a daughter. She was fine with the first three sons and hoped for the fourth kid to be a girl. Turns out it was Kalluto which Is a boy. When she was waiting for the fifth kid, she must also be hoping that it would be a girl but turns out it was Alluka which is also a boy.
From here I think she gave up and just treated Kalluto and Alluka like a girl by dressing them in female clothing and also shaping their personality to look like girls. I think this is also the reason why Kalluto is so close with his mom.
2. Killua’s childhood
Killua always refers to Alluka as “she” even though it was proven that Alluka is indeed a male character. What I think about this matter is that it is connected to the first point. Killua’s mother loves Killua the most. Killua’s mother also trying to shape Kalluto and Alluka’s personalities to look like girls. Killua is very close with his brother, Alluka.
What I can conclude from those points is that Killua refers to Alluka as a “she” because that’s what he used to. Killua only knew Alluka as a girl because of her mom.
3. Transgender?
Well, I really tried to make things not going this way but it is just possible. It is possible that it is what they are and what they choose to be. I still think it’s not it because there is no explanation on this particular matter. Also for the fact that they are still really young right now.
